When Kayla contacted me to document her birth I was so excited! Kayla and Michael had a long road towards this pregnancy. Michael was due to deploy during her pregnancy and so it was even more important to them that this special time be documented because he wouldn't be there to witness his daughter being born.

I love the text from her husband! Kayla started her induction around 4:30.

The plan was to Facetime Michael so that he could see his daughter being born.

Why was a birth photographer something that you wanted?

Kayla :My husband and I lost three babies and then struggled to get pregnant again for two years. We had to go through some fertility treatments to get pregnant with our daughter. We wanted the moment she finally entered the world to be captured since we waited so long for our miracle! It has also been amazing for my husband to look back on the photos, since he was deployed during her birth and was not able to attend.

What was the most important thing that you wanted to remember about your birth?

Kayla: I wanted to remember the way it felt when they laid her on my chest for the first time, after all that pain disappeared. Labor is so intense and motherhood can be so exhausting (especially when you’re doing it on your own) that I wanted to have some photos to remind me what I went through to have her, and how amazing it felt in that moment to know she was okay.

Looking back now how do your photos make you feel?

Kayla: Those photos provide me with a confidence I have never felt before. I carried this little human for nine months and brought her into this world. It’s truly an amazing feeling to look back and see it all play out!

Why did you allow me to share some images publicly?

Kayla: I know having a photographer present for a birth isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m hoping it will encourage those who are on the fence to make that leap! It was truly the best decision we made, and we will forever cherish these photos.
